EASTERN KUKU YALANJIWARRA CULTURE & TOURISM HUB

The Yalanjiwarra Community Engagement Project was a collaborative effort between The Fulcrum Agency and Blaklash, aimed at ensuring that the aspirations and needs of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji community were met in the design of a new cultural centre and tourism hub. The primary objective of the project was to involve the community in the design process, and to ensure that their voices were heard and their cultural needs were taken into account.

To achieve this, Blaklash and The Fulcrum Agency developed and implemented a comprehensive community engagement process. This process included a series of facilitated workshops, which provided an opportunity for members of the community to share their thoughts and ideas about what they wanted to see in the new development. Through these conversations, it was identified that the community desired a place that would serve as a living cultural centre where they could maintain a meaningful connection to their traditional land and culture, while also sharing it with visitors.

Based on the feedback received from the community, the team developed key narratives of the cultural landscape and spatial opportunities. These narratives were then used to inform the design response developed by CA Architects and Cox Architecture. This ensured that the final design reflected the needs and aspirations of the Eastern Kuku Yalanji community, and that it was reflective of their culture and way of life.
